Sega Artist Duncan Gutteridge brings Sonic to Margate

Sega artist Duncan Gutteridge, known for his illustrations of Sonic the Hedgehog will be joining us at PLAY Expo Margate. Duncan drew Knuckles for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994) and Sonic Triple Trouble for Game Gear.

It’s amazing how popular the ‘Old school’ Sonic has become and it’s great to have the opportunity to talk to Sonic fans about the small part I played in his evolution.” Duncan Gutteridge

Duncan will be showing you all just how the experts draw Sonic, so bring your pencils and paper and join in. There will be time at the end for Q&As too, so get those brains warmed up with your best questions about everybody’s favourite blue speedster artist.

To help you on your way, we asked Duncan Gutteridge a few questions about his work with Sonic.

1) How did it feel taking on Sega’s mascot character? Was it a lot of pressure?
As an illustrator it was quite a different brief for me but I was exited by the prospect of drawing Sonic rather than worried by it. I was up for the challenge then and continue to enjoy new challenges today!

2) What creative license did you have with Sonic, how did you get to put ‘your mark’ on him?
I had quite a lot of license with the character, all I was given were the original style guides and the cover of Sonic 2. Other than that I had a free hand to develop the character. Sega wanted to create a solid new style that they didn’t have before (you only have to look at the difference in Sonic’s styling from Sonic 1 to sonic 2!)

3) Sonic has had quite a few allies and enemies over years, if you could create a new one what would they look like? Would they be friend or foe?
If I were to design a new character it would probably be a foe……..perhaps another ‘mad scientist’ character would be fun?

There will also be the chance to meet Duncan in person and even get some signed artwork. So, if you’re a Sonic the Hedgehog fan, you’re not going to want to miss out on this!
